Episode 44: Sons of the Harpy

Jon Snow maintains his grip on first place in seasons 5 episode 4, Sons of the Harpy. However the High Sparrow is moving swiftly up the board. House Tyrell takes a blow with the imprisonment of Loras as Cersei grants new power to the High Sparrow and the Faith. In Meereen Daenerys’ most trusted soldiers defend her city against the traitorous Sons of the Harpy, but at what cost? We will have to wait until the next episode.

In Volantis Jorah knocks out a fisherman. He places the still bound Tyrion in the boat and sets off. Jaime is on a voyage of his own. He is reminded of Brienne as his ship sails past the isle of Tarth. Bronn questions why they are traveling to Dorne aboard a merchant ship and Jaime says it is an attempt to avoid war. Bronn deduces that Jaime is the one who freed Tyrion and he has taken this mission to redeem himself to Cersei. Jaime expresses deep bitterness toward Tyrion, promising Bronn that he will avenge his father should he and Tyrion meet again.
Jorah Mormont earns 1 Wound point for knocking out the fisherman.

Back in King’s Landing Cersei discusses the crown’s debt with the small council. She sends Mace Tyrell to Braavos to treat with the Iron Bank. Cersei commands Ser Meryn to accompany him. He takes this as an honor rather than the threat it could be seens as. As the council disperses Pycelle comments on the councils shrinking size to which Cersei pointedly replies it is not yet “small enough.” In her chambers we see Cersei has received a reply from Littlefinger, but keeps her focus on the High Sparrow, now representative of the Faith. She floats the idea of reviving the Faith Militant, an armed faction of the faith outlawed by the Targaryens. She notes this army would be loyal only to the gods, and to the High Sparrow of course. She then mentions that there is a great sinner in their very midsts who hides behind power and privilege.

The Sparrows spread across the city, carving the seven pointed star into their foreheads to signify their allegiance to the Faith. Lancel Lannister is quick to join. They disrupt the city, raiding brothels and smashing traders goods; punishing the sinful. Lancel approaches Loras Tyrell and has him arrested for “breaking the laws of gods and men.” Margaery is furious at the news and confronts Tommen. He explains he did not imprison Loras, but she already knows it is Cersei. Tommen seems confused, oblivious to the tension between his wife and mother. He promises Margaery he will have her brother freed.

Tommen confronts Cersei demanding Loras be freed, but she explains it is the Faith that holds him not her. She admits to giving the High Sparrow army and says Margaery is right to be upset. She says the Faith cannot be allowed to hold the Queen’s brother with impunity. She tells him to see the High Sparrow himself as he is the King. Tommen goes to the Great Sept, but is barred entry. Shouts of “bastard” and “abomination” can be heard. The Kingsguard offers to cut a path, but Tommen would not profane the Sept with blood as his brother did. Margaery is displeased that her brother remains in a cell while the King and Queen are seemingly powerless.

To the North Selyse makes note of Stannis’ respect for Jon Snow and laments not being able to give him a son. “I gave you nothing but weakness and deformity.” Melisandre interrupts saying Shireen’s scars mean nothing as her father is chosen by the Lord of Light. They will be marching on Winterfell soon and Stannis confirms that he will not leave Melisandre behind as he did at the Blackwater.

In the Lord Commander’s chamber Jon signs letters Sam has written up asking the Lords and Ladies of Westeros for more men to defend the Wall. Jon hesitates when he reaches a letter addressed to Lord Bolton, but Sam says they have no choice as he is now Warden of the North. As Sam takes his leave Melisandre appears. She asks Jon to ride south with them, having been raised in Winterfell he would be a great asset. Jon states that as Lord Commander his place is at the Wall. Melisandre begins trying to seduce him, but Jon resists, first citing Stannis, then his vow to the Watch, finally he admits it is love for the deceased Ygritte which stops him. Before parting, she looks to Jon and tells him he “knows nothing,” as Ygritte had.

Shireen visits her father and thanks him for bringing her as she knows her mother argued against it. She asked if he is ashamed of her. He responds by telling her of how she was infected with greyscale as an infant. Many had argued for sending her to the ruins of Valyria to live out her days with the Stone Men, but he would not allow it because she was Princess Shireen of the House Baratheon and his daughter.

In Winterfell Littlefinger finds Sansa lighting the candles in the Stark family crypt. They stop in front of the tomb of her long dead Aunt Lyanna. Littlefinger tells her that he was at the great tourney when Rhaegar crowned Lyanna the Queen of Love and Beauty over his wife and how the crowd’s cheers had died. Sansa finishes the tale, “…and then he kidnapped her and raped her.” He tells Sansa he must ride for King’s Landing at the Queen’s request so as not to draw suspicion to his role in Sansa’s escape. Sansa is frightened by the prospect of being left alone with the Boltons, but Littlefinger assures her she has the ability to make Ramsay hers.

Jaime and Bronn arrive in Dorne and it does not take long for Dornish soldiers to come upon them. They quickly see through Bronn’s lies when Jaime speaks with an identifiable accent. They are forced to fight the soldiers. Bronn and Jaime fight for lives and win as Jaime’s golden hand proves useful in battle.

Elsewhere in Dorne the Sand Snakes, Oberyn Martell’s bastard daughters, gather and make their thirst for vengeance plain. Ellaria arrives and tells them that Prince Doran will not avenge his brother so it is up to them. She seeks to start a war by striking at Myrcella, but Obara reveals she has captured the captain of Jaime’s ship and knows of his arrival. Ellaria is unconcerned and asks the Sand Snakes if they are with her. Teyene, her own daughter readily agrees and Nymeria as well. Obara kills the ship captain and announces her allegiance.

Across the Narrow Sea Jorah finally relents and removes Tyrion’s gag. Jorah reveals he is taking her to Queen Daenerys, and Tyrion is amused by the irony as that was his destination. Jorah is unconvinced that they are on the same side. Tyrion deduces Jorah’s identity and concludes that his spying activities for Varys were discovered and he was cast out. Tyrion’s hard truths serve only to annoy Jorah who proceeds to knock him out.

In Meereen Barristan tells Daenerys of her brother Rhaegar’s love of music and how he enjoyed walking among the common people and playing for coin. Daenerys is surprised as all Viserys had ever told her of their older brother was that he was good at killing. Barristan notes that Rhaegar never relished the battle field and much prefered singing. They are interrupted by the announcement of Hizdahr Zo Loraq. She gives Barristan leave to go walk among the people and “Sing a song for me.”

Hizdahr again beseeches Daenerys to open the fighting pits arguing that they are a deep rooted tradition to the Meereenese and it is tradition that is needed to unify the people. As they speak the Sons of the Harpy attack a market place. Vala the prostitute who helped kill White Rat, directs a troop of unsullied into a trap. Grey Worm fights fiercely despite being badly injured but he is surrounded. Then Barristan arrives giving him a needed respite. Barristan sustains several injuries while taking out the Sons of the Harpy, but with only one left it looks as though his throat will be slit until Grey Worm rises saving him. Both collapse, their fates uncertain.
