Episode 42: The House of Black and White

Many points to go around in season 5 episode 2, The House Of Black And White, as Cersei consolidates her power base in King’s Landing. Jon Snow gains the respect of his brothers in the Night’s Watch earning him first place on the leaderboard. Daenerys is faced with tough decisions in Meereen and Arya an uncertain future in Braavos.

Arya arrives in Braavos and makes her way the House of Black and White home to the Faceless men, but receives a chilly reception. Denied entry she lingers for a bit reciting the names on her list, but soon loses patience. She tosses the coin that Jaqen gave her into the sea and sets out to explore the city.

On the road a hungry Brienne and Podrick come upon an inn. They are surprised to find Sansa dining with Littlefinger. Sansa asks him about the message he received while they were with Yohn Royce. He reveals his marriage proposal has been accepted, but the two are interrupted by Brienne. She drops to her knee and explains to Sansa she was once her mother’s sworn shield and has sworn a vow to protect her. Littlefinger wastes no time pointing out her Lannister armament and questions her loyalty. Sana is suspicious and refuses Brienne’s protection. Littlefinger sends his guards after her. Brienne is able to escape, but Pod loses control of his horse and finds himself cornered. Suddenly Brienne appears dispatching two of Littlefinger’s guards and saving Pod. He offers that as both Stark girls have refused her protection she is perhaps released from her vow, but Brienne does not believe Sansa safe with Littlefinger and declares they will follow them.
Brienne of Tarth earns 3 Victory points for besting Littlefinger’s guards and 1 Morghulis point for killing in the fight.
Podrick Payne earns 1 Survival point for escaping the fight with Littlefinger’s guards.

In King’s Landing Cersei is disturbed to receive a package from Dorne, Myrcella’s necklace in the jaws of a dornish viper. An obvious threat to their daughter’s life she shows it to Jaime. He promises to go to Dorne and bring Myrcella home. Cersei is unimpressed asking what a one handed man can accomplish, but Jaime does not intend to go alone. He finds Bronn speaking with his betrothed Lollys Stokeworth. Jaime informs him that he should have heeded Tyrion’s warning about gifts from Cersei as Lollys will instead be marrying Ser Wyllis Bracken. He comforts Bronn saying he has a mission for him and should they prove successful he will get a bride far beyond Lollys.
Bronn receive -3 Betrayal points for being double crossed by Cersei and 3 Alliance points for partnering with Jaime on his mission to Dorne.

Ellaria’s rage grows as she watches Myrcella in the Water Gardens of Dorne. Myrcella seems quite happy in Dorne and with her prince Trystane. While both are aware the marriage was arranged the two have genuine feelings for one another. Ellaria confronts the ruling prince, Doran, for being so passive in the wake of his brother’s death. She wants to use Myrcella as revenge on the Lannisters for what she deems Oberyn’s murder. Doran refuses and tells her that Oberyn’s death was no murder. She takes her leave with her thirst for vengeance unquenched.

To the east Daario and Grey Worm patrol the streets of Meereen looking for evidence of Sons of the Harpy. They are able to catch one and bring him to Daenerys. Her council calls for his death, with the exception of Barristan who advises restraint. When alone he explains that her father’s epitaph “The Mad King” was well earned. He cautions Daenerys that each time King Aerys took a life it made him feel powerful and right and made it that much easier to take the next one. Daenerys agrees that the man shall have a trial.

Varys and Tyrion set out from Pentos on their way to Meereen. Tyrion’s mood is unchanged and continues to drown his guilt in wine. They travel in a closed carriage for fear Tyrion might be seen as Cersei has put a bounty on his head. Tyrion cannot abide the trapped feeling and demands they go for a walk noting “How many dwarves are there in the world? Is Cersei going to kill them all?” However, in King’s Landing Cersei shows no apprehension at the idea when presented with a head she identifies as not her brother. She declines to punish the killers saying, “I don’t want to dissuade the other hunters. Mistakes will be made.” Qyburn asks to use the head in his “work” and Cersei obliges.

Cersei and Qyburn then make their way to the small council. The chair for the Hand of the King remains vacant, Cersei says Tommen will name one when he comes of age, essentially making her Hand in all but name. Mace Tyrell offers himself, but instead she makes him Master of Coin in addition to Master of Ships. Pycelle gives himself as an option for the position, but Cersei only ignores him and announces Qyburn as Master of Whispers. She tries to make her Uncle Keven Master of War, but he refuses to act as her puppet as she stacks the small council with sycophants.
Cersei Lannister earns 3 Honors points for her position as acting Hand.
Mace Tyrell earns 3 Honors points for become Master of Coin.
Qyburn earns 3 Honors points for becoming Master of Whispers.

At Castle Black Shireen teaches Gilly to read after an apparently disastrous attempt by Sam. The three discuss Greyscale, the disease which scarred Shireen. Gilly reveals two of her sisters were stricken with it. At the end they were covered and acting feral, so Craster brought them into the woods. Selyse interrupts and warns her daughter not to trust any of the wildlings, they may seek to use to avenge their executed King.

Stannis makes it clear to Jon Snow that he is not pleased by his decision to show mercy to Mance Rayder. Stannis shows Jon a message he received from Commander Mormont’s niece Lyanna, Lady of Bear Isle, proclaiming the North knows only one King whose name is Stark. Davos tells Jon that tonight Alliser will be elected Lord Commander and will take pleasure in making Jon’s life miserable. Stannis offers to release him from his vows to the Night’s Watch and make him Lord of Winterfell. Jon is shocked by the proposal, but confides to Sam that he will not accept because he swore loyalty to The Watch.

Elections for the new Lord Commander begin with Janos speaking in favor of Alliser and another brother stands for Denys Mallister commander of Eastwatch. Sam senses the men favor and Alliser and offers another option, Jon Snow. He reminds the brothers of Jon’s valor against the wildlings when Jon held the Wall against Mance’s army and commanded the raid to avenge Commander Mormont’s murder. The men are moved and when Maester Aemon tallies the votes Jon and Alliser are equal. Aemon adds his own vote making Jon Lord Commander to applause.
Janos Slynt earns 3 Alliance points for speaking for Alliser Thorne.
Alliser Thorne earns 3 Alliance points for Janos’ loyalty
Jon Snow earns 3 Alliance points for the loyalty of his friends and 3 Honors points for becoming Lord Commander of the Night’s Watch.
Samwell Tarly earns 3 Alliance points for speaking for Jon.
Maester Aemon earns 3 Alliance points for supporting Jon.
Olly earns 3 Alliance points for supporting Jon.

In Braavos Arya wanders the streets showing us how her pigeon hunting skills have improved. She is confronted by 3 men, but unsheathes her sword and orders them to leave her alone. Suddenly the men cower and run away, Arya turns and finds the man from the House of Black and White that sent her away. She follows him back to the temple and reveals himself as Jaqen, but notes that is not his name he is “No one. And that is who a girl must become.” ushering into the House of Black and White.
Arya Stark earn 3 Alliance points for being accepted by Jaqen.
Jaqen H’ghar earns 3 Alliance points accepting Arya.

Back in Meereen Mossador takes it upon himself to punish the Son of the Harpy. Killing him and displaying his body on the street. Daenerys is appalled by his betrayal, but he claims he acted for her. She tells him that the law is the law and he will be punished. She holds a public execution in front of an unruly crowd. After Daario strikes off his head the crowd turns and a riot erupts. Daenerys and her people escape and a depressed Dany asks to be left alone. Alone on the balcony Drogon appears Daenerys is shocked, but he flies off before she can touch him.
Mossador receives 1 Morghulis point for killing the Son of the Harpy and -5 Death points for his execution.
Daenerys Targaryen earns -3 Betrayal of Mossador, 2 Morghulis points for ordering Mossador’s death, and 1 Survival point for escaping the riot in Meereen.
Daario Naharis earns 3 Morghulis points for ordering Mossador’s death and 1 Survival point for escaping the riot in Meereen.
Barristan Selmy earns 1 Survival point for escaping the riot in Meereen.
Missandei earns 1 Survival point for escaping the riot in Meereen.
