Justice in short supply in season 4 episode 6, The Laws of Gods and Men, as Tyrion’s trial for Joffrey’s murder starts. Cersei takes steps to ensure a guilty verdict. To the North Yara attempts to fulfill her promise to free her brother, but Ramsay’s control over Theon, now his “Reek,” thwarts her plans. Across the Narrow Sea Stannis continues to rebuild his army so he may press his claim as King of Westeros.

Stannis and Davos have sailed to Braavos to treat with the Iron Bank. The representatives are initially unimpressed, viewing his campaign for the Iron Throne as a bad investment. However Davos offers an impassioned speech which seems to sway them. Later Davos finds his old friend Salladhor Saan lounging in a bath house and asks that he joins their cause again. He reveals that the Iron Bank has agreed to back them and Stannis has the coin to pay him.

In the North Yara and her men breach the walls of the Dreadfort hoping to find and rescue Theon. Their effort proves to be in vain as Theon refuses to leave believing it is another sadistic trick of Ramsay’s. Ramsay joins the fray and she is forced to flee without her brother. She tells her men that Theon is dead. Ramsay rewards his “Reek” by allowing him to bathe. He explains that he needs Reek’s help to take back a castle held by Ironborn, but he will have to pretend to be Theon Greyjoy again.
Yara Greyjoy earns 1 Morghulis point for killing a Bolton guard and -3 Defeat points for failing in her mission to rescue Theon.
Ramsay Snow earns 3 Victory points for securing his prisoner “Reek.”
To the east Drogon’s hunting has become a problem for the shepherds of Meereen, but Daenerys promises to repay them three times the worth of what Drogon takes from their flocks. She is also petitioned by Hizdahr Zo Loraq who wishes to give a proper funeral to his father, one of the Masters crucified when Daenerys took the city whose corpses still rot in the sun. She warms to his plight and allows him to bury his father.
The small council meets in King’s Landing, now attended by Mace Tyrell and Oberyn Martell. They have heard of the Hound’s encounter at the inn and put out a reward for his head. Talk turns to Daenerys, now a greater threat after her assault on Slaver’s Bay and the swelling ranks of her army. It’s noted that Jorah is no longer their spy and now Barristan Selmy has joined her cause. Tywin takes a moment to rebuke Cersei for dismissing him, as his name is renowned throughout Westeros. Tywin asks Varys if his birds can find their way to Meereen.
Tyrion’s trial begins and unsurprisingly does not go well for him. Meryn Trant eagerly tells of Tyrion’s “threats” to Joffrey. Grand Maester Pycelle is all to willing to slander him as revenge for his banishment to that black cells when Tyrion was acting as Hand Of The King. Varys also speaks against him, though willingly admits that Tyrion saved the city during Stannis’ attack.
During the court’s recess Jaime goes to his father to plead for Tyrion’s life. He offers to leave the King’s Guard and take his place as heir to Casterly Rock. Tywin agrees without hesitation. Tyrion will be allowed to join the Night’s Watch if he asks the court for mercy. Tyrion does not put nearly the same trust in their father, noting Ned Stark was offered the same deal.
When the trial proceeds Cersei unveils her surprise witness, Shae. She confesses that in addition to being Sansa’s maid she was Tyrion’s whore and claims he and Sansa plotted Joffrey’s murder together. Unable to bear any more, Tyrion ends the proceedings. Not by declaring his guilt, but demanding trial by combat.
