Stannis’ fleet approaches King’s Landing. Many of his men are anxious, but Davos seems calm. His son notes that this is a homecoming for him as he was raised in the city slums, but Davos reflects that he spent his entire life their avoiding the royal forces that they are now sailing straight into. Matthos reminds him they are the royal fleet sailing against traitors. He believes the lord of light will protect their cause and besides, he trusts his captain.

Grand Maester Pycelle comes to the Queen’s chambers brandishing the potion she requested. He warns her that Essence of Nightshade is quite dangerous, but she stops him as she is well aware of the effects. The soldiers prepare in their own way drinking and singing, Bronn among them. He’s charming one of Littlefinger’s prostitutes when a hush falls over as Sandor Clegane enters. The Hound takes no joy in drinking, singing, or whores; only killing. The men begin to square off, but are interrupted by the bells summoning them to arms.
Podrick dresses Tyrion for battle while Varys takes a moment to confer with him. Varys shows him a map of the city’s hidden tunnels which could provide escape, but Tyrion will not run. Varys warns him that Stannis is in league with a red priestess of Asshai. He reveals a deep distrust of magic and mysticism stemming from his mutilation as a child. He believes Tyrion is the only one who can stop a “man in service to such powers” from taking the Iron Throne.
The bells ring out as Stannis’ ships approach and the Lannister men prepare for battle. Tyrion and Bronn advise one another not to die admitting the two have formed an unlikely friendship. Tyrion is surprised to see Lady Sansa and pretends not to know her handmaiden Shae. Joffrey has asked for her to see him off and demands she kiss his blade before battle. Sansa needles at Joffrey asking if he will be fighting where the battle is thickest as her brother does. Joffrey warns that Robb’s time will come after he is through with his Uncle Stannis.

She warns Sansa that Ilyn Payne is with them because she does not intend to let Stannis take them alive.
Sandor fights on outside the walls, but as burning men rush at him he loses his courage and retreats. Stannis and his men climb the walls and gain a foothold. Tyrion tries to persuade The Hound to return to battle and Joffrey demands it, but the Hound is done. “Fuck the Kingsguard. Fuck the city. Fuck the king.”
Stannis’ men pound a ram against the city gates. Lancel appears giving Joffrey an excuse to flee the battle and leaves his Kingsguard to represent him on the field. Tyrion seeing no other choice leads the troops himself. He brings them through one of Varys’ tunnels out to attack the enemy from behind. Lancel begs the Queen to let him escort Joffrey back to the battle, but she responds by hitting his injury and leaving with her youngest son Tommen. Sansa tries to calm the remaining women and Shae tells her she should go to her chambers and bar the door.
