Episode 16: The Old Gods and the New

Tensions in King’s Landing boil over as the people make their displeasure known to King Joffrey. Theon makes a daring move sending him up the Leaderboard and Robb tumbling down to last place. Arya also finds her way slowly up the ranks as she settles into her role as the ghost of Harrenhal. She’s not the only female flexing her muscles. The wildling woman Osha shows she can be as deceptive as she is dangerous when forced to prove her loyalties.

Summary

Maester Luwin rushed through the Winterfell towers. He quickly scrawls a message managing to send off a raven before armed men come for him. Bran awakes to Theon explaining that he and his men have taken Winterfell in the name of his father King Balon Greyjoy. Bran does not want to yield but agrees to do so to spare his people.
Theon Greyjoy earns 3 Victory points for his invasion of Winterfell and 1 Capture point for the castle and it’s people.
Bran Stark receives -1 Capture point for becoming Theon’s prisoner.
Richard Stark receives -1 Capture point for becoming Theon’s prisoner.
Robb Stark receives -3 Fall From Power points for the loss of Winterfell and -3 Betrayal points from Theon capturing his brothers and family home.
Osha receives -1 Capture point for becoming Theon’s prisoner.
Hodor receives -1 Capture point for becoming Theon’s prisoner.

Theon assembles the people of Winterfell in the yard to hear Bran’s declaration that Theon is now Lord of Winterfell. Osha steps forward and reminds him that she was brought here a prisoner and offers to fight for him, but he does not trust the wildling. When Bran asks why she is betraying him Osha tells him that his dream of the sea drowning Winterfell has come true and she does not intend to drown with it. Rodrik Cassel is brought in by Theon’s men, he curses Theon for a traitor. Dagmar tells Theon he cannot let the man who disrespected him live. Theon beheads Ser Rodrik, but misses and the it turns into a bloody display.
Bran Stark earns 1 Magic point for his premonition dream.
Theon Greyjoy earns 3 Morghulis points for executing Rodrik.
Rodrik Cassel receives -1 Capture point for being taken prisoner and-5 Death points for his execution.

At Harrenhal Tywin berates Ser Amory for sending a letter to the wrong house and discovers Arya can read better than his commanders. Littlefinger appears to discuss with Tywin the prospect of an alliance with the Tyrells and Tyrion’s proposal to Cat. Arya struggles to not be seen as Littlefinger knew Arya Stark in her time at the capital.

Jon Snow follows Qorin Halfhand up the Frostfangs. They attack a group of wildling lookouts. They win the fight and Jon takes the woman Ygritte as a hostage. Qorin says she must be executed. Jon remembering his father’s lessons believes it must be him that swings the sword. However when the moment comes he strikes the rock instead and Ygritte escapes. He bounds after eventually capturing her again, but now the sun is going down and he is not sure where he is.
Jon Snow earns 3 Victory points for the fight with the wildlings and 1 Capture point for taking Ygritte prisoner.
Qorin Halfhand earns 3 Victory points and 1 Morghulis point for the fight with the wildlings.

Myrcella Baratheon sets out to sea to meet her betrothed in Dorne. The royal family is in attendance to see her off. Cersei warns Tyrion that she will repay him for shipping away her only daughter. As they make their way back to the Red Keep the hungry and poor become increasingly restless shouting insults at the King. Tyrion senses the tension and has Tommen escorted back to the castle. The situation erupts when cow shit is thrown at Joffrey and he screams for their heads, the crowd rises up attacking the entire retinue. Cersei escorted back quickly and Sandor Clegane grabs the King. Tyrion watches as the mob descend on the High Septon tearing him limb from limb. Behind the castle gates Tyrion berates Joffrey for creating the violent situation, then notes that Sansa is missing. Joffrey angrily dismisses it, “Let them have her,” but Tyrion knows she is crucial to getting his brother back. Sansa is trapped by three men who hold her down and are about to rape her when Sandor Clegane burst through killing them and saving Sansa.
Joffrey Baratheon earns 1 Survival point for escaping the riot in King’s Landing.
Cersei Lannister earns 1 Survival point for escaping the riot in King’s Landing.
Tyrion Lannister earns 1 Survival point for escaping the riot in King’s Landing.
Sansa Stark earns 1 Survival point for escaping the riot in King’s Landing.
Sandor “The Hound” Clegane earns 3 Victory points and 1 Morghulis point for defeating Sansa’s attackers.
Tommen Baratheon earns 1 Survival point for escaping the riot in King’s Landing.
Meryn Trant earns 1 Survival point for escaping the riot in King’s Landing.

At the ancient city of Qarth Daenerys grows impatient as she waits for the Spice King. Xaro again urges her to marry him,but she refuses. Finally the Spice King arrives, but he will not help her in her quest for the Iron Throne. She has no army, allies, or wealth and is therefore a poor investment. She angrily declares that she will take what is hers with fire and blood, he replies that she might, but not with his ships.

In Harrenhal Tywin and Arya discuss reading and fathers. Arya asks about his father, he tells her that while he loved them, his father was a weak man who nearly destroyed their house. While he is distracted Arya takes a letter on the table reporting ten thousand men heading for Golden Tooth while Robb Stark is moving south along the coast. She is caught with it by Ser Amory and when she cannot explain herself she flees. She runs to Jaqen H’ghar giving him the name Amory Lorch, but it must be done immediately. Ser Amory enters Tywin’s door and falls dead, a poison dart in his neck.
Arya Stark earns 2 Morghulis points for ordering Ser Amory’s death.
Jaqen H’ghar earns 3 Morghulis points for killing Ser Amory.
Amory Lorch receives -5 Death points.

Jon leads a tied Ygritte through the frozen terrain still unable to find the brothers of The Night’s Watch. They are forced to make camp for the night. Ygritte takes the opportunity to tease him about the Watch’s vow of celibacy and urges him to consider the life of the Free Folk.

Robb continues his flirtation with Talisa, but they are interrupted by Cat’s return. She reminds him of his vow to take a Frey bride, but he has not forgotten. Roose Bolton appears, Maester Luwin’s raven has reached it’s destination. Robb is enraged by Theon’s betrayal, and wants to ride for Winterfell. Roose Bolton offers to have his bastard son Ramsay rout him out so they can continue their campaign against the Lannisters.

Osha comes to Theon’s chambers. She offers that she has useful talents he did not consider and removes her robe. She makes it clear she expects her freedom in return and he agrees. As Theon sleeps Osha is seen walking outside by a guard, she kills him then signals to Rickon and Hodor with Bran on his back. The four escape the Castle.
Theon Greyjoy earns 3 Alliance points for his arrangement with Osha only to receive -3 Betrayal points when she helps the Stark boys escape.
Osha earns 6 Alliance points for deceiving Theon to help Bran,Rickon, and Hodor and 1 Morghulis point for killing the Ironborn guard.
Bran Stark earns 3 Alliance points for Osha’s loyalty and 1 Survival point for escaping Winterfell.
Rickon Stark earns 3 Alliance points for Osha’s loyalty and 1 Survival point for escaping Winterfell.
Hodor earns 3 Alliance points for Osha’s loyalty and 1 Survival point for escaping Winterfell.

Daenerys is disgusted by the offer of the Copper King for 1 ship on the condition that she spend a night with him. She will not degrade herself for a single ship, but Xaro notes that the path from poverty to wealth is not always pure. When they return to his palace they find her people slaughtered and her dragons missing. Elsewhere, a lone hooded man carries the caged dragons on his back to a large stone tower.
Daenerys Targaryen receives -3 Defeat points for the attack on her people at Xaro’s palace.
Irri receives -5 Death points for being killed in the attack at Xaro’s palace.
