Episode 12: The Night Lands

Stannis Baratheon continues his climb up the Leaderboard in the second episode of season 2, The Night Lands. But the Lannisters continue to sure up their power base as Tyrion makes it known he places an emphasis on act in his position of Acting Hand, sending Janos Slynt tumbling down the Leaderboard. While Daenerys still remain point free the loss of her loyal bloodrider seems an ill omen.

Summary


Arya is posing as Arry the orphan boy making her way to the wall with Yoren of the Night’s Watch and his new recruits. One, a prisoner from King’s Landing dungeons introduces himself to Arya as Jaqen H’ghar, Gendry warns her Yoren says they’re dangerous and not to antagonize them. Arya seems to be fitting in well, but panics when men from the City Watch appear. She thinks they’re searching for her, but they are actually trying to locate Gendry. Though he doesn’t know it he is the bastard son of the former King Robert, and his last living child. Yoren is able to scare the men off, but they warn that they will return.

In King’s Landing Varys introduces himself to Shae, much to Tyrion’s anger. He warns The Spider he understands the implicit threat and issues one of his own. Varys is anything but frightened though having acquired a talent for survival. Later at the small council meeting Cersei receives Robb’s terms and responds by ripping the parchment in two, telling her cousin Alton to pass that message to Robb Stark. They also receives Mormont’s letter warning of the White Walkers. While the other councilors treat it as a joke, Tyrion is the only one who takes the letter seriously. When he warns the Night’s Watch is all that protects the realm from the wild north his sister merely responds “I have every confidence the brave men of the Night’s Watch will protect us all.”

In that wild North the Night’s Watch is still camped at Craster’s Keep. Sam brings Gilly, one of Craster’s daughters, to Jon. She begs them to take her with them. “I’m going to have a baby, if it’s a boy I…” Jon presses her, but she does not say what Craster does with his sons. Jon refuses, they are going still further north, and may well come against Mance Rayder or worse. Sam leaves dejected.

Daenerys and her Khalasar await her bloodriders. There’s hope when they see a horse in the distance. It is Rhakaro’s horse and it returns riderless. He has been decapitated, his head stuffed in a saddle bag. Daenerys promises the grieving Irri that they will build him a funeral pyre and he will ride in the Night Lands with his ancestors. To Jorah she swears she will avenge him.
Rhaakro receives -5 Death points for his decapitation.

Tyrion shares dinner with Commander of the city watch and recent Lord of Harrenhal Janos Slynt. While it starts out friendly enough Tyrion’s tone soon sharpens. “I intend to serve as Hand of the King until my father returns from the war, and seeing as you betrayed the last Hand of the King, well, I just wouldn’t feel safe with you lurking about.” He instructs Bronn to have Janos apprehended. He informs Janos that Bronn is now Commander of the City Watch and he will be taking the black and joining the Night’s Watch.
Tyrion Lannister earns 1 Exile point for sending Janos to the Wall.
Bronn earns 3 Honors points for his appointment to Commander of the City Watch
Janos Slynt receives -1 Exiled point and -3 Fall From Power points for the loss of his lands and lordship of Harrenhal.

Arya questions Gendry as to why the gold cloaks are after him, but he has no idea. He tells her that he was visited by both Hands of the King, Jon and Ned, shortly before their death. Gendry asks why Arya thought they were after her, she tries to deflect, but when he reveals he knows she’s a girl she tells him her true identity. He promises not to tell the others.

Theon Greyjoy amuses himself with the captain’s daughter as he makes his way home to Pyke to see his father Lord Balon Greyjoy for the first time in 9 years. He imagines a great homecoming welcome, but is sorely disappointed when there is not even a person to greet him. A woman who seems to recognize him offers to ride him to the castle on her horse. Theon uses the journey as an excuse to grope and flirt. He is further surprised at his father’s less than welcoming tone. He scoffs at Theon’s proposed alliance with the Starks. The woman then comes striding in revealing herself as Yara Greyjoy, Theon’s elder sister, and the only surviving child to be raised by Balon Greyjoy. The two make it clear they have plans of their own.

Davos speaks with Salladhor Saan, an old smuggler friend. He convinces his friend to back Stannis’ claim to the throne with his ships and gold. Davos promises he will be rewarded for his service. His son Matthos becomes annoyed by their flippant discussion of the war. He has become a true believer of the Lord of Light and Melisandre, he urges his father to give the new faith a chance. Davos is uninterested, he does his best to be a good man, but gives little thought to the gods. Stannis is the one he follows, the one he owes his life and loyalty to.
Davos Seaworth earns 3 Alliance points for brokering the alliance between Stannis and Salladhor.
Salladhor Saan earns 3 Alliance points for agreeing to back Stannis.
Stannis Baratheon earns 3 Alliance points for Salladhor Saan’s allegiance.
Matthos Seaworth earns 3 Alliance points for his faith in the Lord of Light and Melisandre.

Cersei is not pleased with Tyrion’s decision to exile Janos Slynt. He tries to explain that it was necessary, they are losing the people. He accuses her of ordering the death of Robert’s bastards, but quickly realizes it was Joffrey. Cersei is in no mood for his truths or his japes. She cruelly reminds him that their mother died to bring him into the world and takes her leave.

Davos tells Stannis that Salladhor Saan is with them. Stannis is pleased, but quickly dismisses Davos and his son to be alone with Melisandre. He fears they do not have the numbers to defeat Renly or the Lannisters in the field. She tells him he must give himself fully to the Lord of Light and promises him the son his wife has failed to give him. The two have sex.

At Craster’s Keep Jon hears a noise and sees Craster making his way into the woods with a baby. Jon follows and is shocked to see Craster leaving his son for the White Walkers. He catches only a glimpse of them before Craster knocks him unconscious.
Craster earns 3 Alliance points for his offering to the White Walkers and 1 Wound point for knocking out Jon.
The White Walkers earn 3 Alliance point for Craster’s sacrifice to them.
Jon Snow earns -1 Wound points for being knocked out by Craster.
