“As was I.”
Cersei Lannister and Eddard Stark

Brotherhood seems to be the prevailing theme as The Night’s Watch finally make their way to the Leaderboard in episode 4 Cripples, Bastards, and Broken Things. Gregor “The Mountain” Clegane also makes his debut and we learn the grizzly history behind his brother, “The Hound,” Sandor’s scars. While the episode was a bit of a slow one in terms of points, Cat’s actions signal some big upheavals in the episodes to come.

Knowing Master at Arms, Alliser Thorne is sure to make Sam’s life a nightmare, Jon convinces the other recruits to go easy on him. When Rast refuses Jon, Pyp, and Grenn threaten Rast into submission, with a little help from Jon’s direwolf Ghost. In King’s Landing Ned continues his investigation into Jon Arryn’s death. First Pycelle gives him a book Lord Jon had been studying before his passing. A ponderous tome detailing the lineages of Westeros’ great houses. Next Littlefinger leads him to a bastard son of King Robert, Gendry, an armorer’s apprentice whom Jon had met with shortly before his death. Littlefinger also advises Ned to send his man Jory to have a word with Jon’s squire Ser Hugh, newly knighted. Seeing that Jory is no Knight though, Ser Hugh rebuffs him.

Across the Narrow Sea Drogo and his hoard make way to Vaes Dothrak, sacred city of the Dothraki.Daenerys confidence in her role as Khaleesi continues to grow as does Viserys agitation. Tensions culminate when Viserys strikes his sister and for perhaps the first time in her life, she fights back. Later she speaks with Ser Jorah finally giving words to her growing doubts, “He’ll never take us home.”

Arya and Sansa attend their first Tourney. Both are excited, particularly Sansa who has always longed to see the songs of Knight’s’ valor come to life. The brutal reality becomes all to apparent when Ser Gregor Clegane, known as “The Mountain,” a knight in service to House Lannister takes the field against Ser Hugh of the Vale. Coincidently the same Ser Hugh Ned was looking to speak to. A horrified crowd watches as the point of Gregor’s lance goes through Ser Hugh’s throat. Littlefinger, who had come to introduce himself to his old friend Cat’s daughters tells them the story of the Mountain and the Hound. After receiving a chilly reception at Winterfell, Tyrion has made his way South arriving at the same inn that Catelyn and Ser Rodrik happen to be stopped. She then declares Tyrion a conspirator in the attempt on her son’s life and take Tyrion prisoner.
