Episode 2: The Kingsroad

Tensions begin to rise between the Starks, Lannisters, and Baratheons in episode 2, The Kingsroad. Arya pulls into a 3-way tie for second place with the Targaryens, while Joffrey slips down to last place after his humiliating defeat at the hands of Arya and her direwolf.

Tyrion Lannister awakes and sharply admonishes his nephew Prince Joffrey for not having given his sympathies to Lord and Lady Stark. Joffrey’s snarky response earns him a swift backhand from his Uncle. Tyrion then announces his intention to accompany Benjen Stark and Jon Snow on their journey to the Wall, the largest structure ever built by man and the end of the civilized world.

Ned’s bastard son, Jon Snow says his farewells to his siblings as he prepares to to join the Brotherhood of the Night’s Watch with his Uncle. Before he goes he presents a special farewell token to his youngest sister, the tomboy Arya. Her own sword, which she names Needle.
Arya Stark receives 3 Honors points for the sword Jon gifts her.

Ned must ride South with his daughters Arya and Sansa and the rest of the King’s court, but a grief stricken Catelyn refuses to leave Bran’s bedside. Not even a fire in the stables can bestir her. As the everyone rushes to put out the blaze a disheveled man enters Bran’s bed chamber muttering “You’re not supposed to be here… It’s a mercy…” He moves to attack Bran, but Cat stands in his path. Catelyn’s hands are sliced as she struggles to disarm the attacker. She and Bran are saved when Bran’s direwolf suddenly leaps in ripping out the man’s throat.
Catelyn Stark earns 1 Survival point for the attack and -1 Wound point for for her injury to her hands.

The encounter leaves Cat shaken, but also suspicious. She inspects the tower Bran fell from and finds a long strand of blonde hair. Now believing the Lannisters behind Bran’s attack, she wonders if this might be connected to the death of Jon Arryn. She resolves to ride to King’s Landing to warn Ned and share her suspicions. Ser Rodrick, Winterfell’s Master of Arms, offers to accompany her.

Across the Narrow Sea Daenerys is fascinated by the Dragon Eggs she received at her wedding and seems to take strength from them. With the help of her handmaiden, Doreah’s teaching, Daenerys solidifies her alliance with Drogo and the two become closer, but Viserys continues to grow impatient. Upon news of the marriage King Robert is greatly disturbed and to Ned’s shock suggests assassinating Daenerys and her brother. Robert warns him that a storm is coming and Westeros is not prepared.

On the Kingsroad Sansa is smitten with Prince Joffrey who offers her wine as they walk along the countryside. They soon come on her sister Arya who, excited by her gift from Jon, has asked the butcher’s boy, Mycah to help her practice. Joffrey takes special pleasure in tormenting the boy, but Arya attacks the Prince giving her friend a chance to escape. Before Joffrey can turn his fury on her, Arya’s wolf Nymeria leaps into the fray savaging Joffrey’s arm so that Arya is able to disarm the older boy.
Arya Stark earns 3 Victory points for the fight.
Joffrey Baratheon receives 1 wound point for his torture of Micah, -3 Defeat points for his battle with Arya, and -1 Wound points for the bite given to him by Nymeria.

Arya drives Nymeria off fearful of how she might be punished. But it is Queen Cersei who has the last word. After Robert refuses to punish Arya when Sansa refuses to corroborate her story, Cersei demands Sansa’s wolf be executed in place of Nymeria.
Cersei Lannister earns 2 Morghulis points for ordering the death of Lady.

Ned prepares to carry out the sentence himself, but he sees “The Hound”, Sandor Clegane, Joffrey’s sworn shield riding into camp. In a bag on his horse are the remains of Mycah the butcher’s boy. Ned gives Lady the clean death he feels she deserves while back in Winterfell Bran snaps awake.
